The Rook Family Tree
JOE ORLANDO ROOK; was born 11th March 1863 at Boughton. He was Christened on 24th October 1866, also at Boughton. He died on 6th October 1939 at Boughton; he was apparently picking fruit at the time for some elderly woman in their back garden! Joe is my Great Grandfather.
Joe Orlando Rook married MARY ELIZABETH TREADWELL on 13th February 1886 at Crowhurst, Sussex. It is believed they had to 'run away' to marry as Joe may not have been what Mary's Dad had wanted for a son-in-law!
Mary was born on 26th April 1866 at Hartley, Kent. She was Christened on 4th July 1866, also at Hartley. Her parents were William Treadwell of Hartley & Eliza Cooper of Fawkham. Mary's family moved to Boughton and lived at Scarbutts Manor House, the street. She died 27th December 1944 at Rats Castle, Darenth, Kent.

Believe the 2 boys were actually born in Boughton and not Hartley.
In the 1890's Jo & Mary (along with some Treadwell relatives) took off to NZ and Australia, they returned in 1900. Florence Treadwell (Mary's sister) kept a diary of their travels, I shall add a link to the 1895 diary shortly. If anyone has any details (however small) of their trip 'down under' could they kindly get in touch as I have little info on this.

Maggie Rooke was brought up by her Uncle and Aunt, EDWARD THOMAS WADE & DORCAS AMELIA WADE (nee Treadwell). In 1911 they were in Leatherhead, Surrey. Perhaps this is because Joe and Mary found it financially difficult to settle back in England. Maggie was brought up well and is believed to of received a good education, probably better than her siblings had been given. It must have felt odd though, being the only child to have been given up from a family of 8 children (albeit a brother had died in Australia). I wonder how she got on with her family in Boughton. Maggie unfortunately died at 24 of TB, reportedly just 3 weeks before she was due to marry. I had a portrait of Maggie on my bedroom wall for years, she bares a striking resemblance to my sister Julie, and some say myself.
