The said Emily Tong , on oath said : Single-woman and reside at the Parish of Boughton Under The Blean in the County of Kent on the 13th day of August 1871, I was delivered of a Bastard female Child, at Boughton Under The Blean in the County of Kent. Othello Rook of Boughton Under The Blean in the County of Kent, Labourer is the Father of such Bastard female Child.
I have known the Deft for the last 5 years. The Deft promised me marriage on 13th November. I was out with Deft and he had connexion with me. The first time he had connexion with me was in August 1870. On 16th September last I asked Deft if he would keep the child and he said ‘yes’. Mrs Smith was present Deft paid 4/-
Jane Smith said. I am the wife of Frederick Smith of Dunkirk, Labourer. On 16th September I was with Emily Tong and heard her ask Othello Rook if he was going to keep the child and he said ‘yes’
